France takes major step towards constitutional protection of abortion rights

The International Planned Parenthood Federation congratulates France on its historic vote to enshrine the right to abortion in the Constitution.

The International Planned Parenthood Federation congratulates France on its historic vote to enshrine the right to abortion in the Constitution. We are especially proud of the tremendous work and leadership of our French Member Association, Le Planning Familial.

We are now awaiting the final adoption of this constitutional reform by the French Congress, a step that must formally be instigated by French President Emmanuel Macron.

“This is a historic decision, for France, but also for Europe and worldwide. A year and a half after the US Supreme Court's overturning of Roe V. Wade, the French victory is a clear and optimistic message to the international community: abortion is a fundamental freedom.” Dr Alvaro Bermejo, Director-General of the International Planned Parenthood Federation.

Beyond the important impact of this decision for women in France, it also sends an important political signal to other governments in the EU and around the world. In Europe, abortion rights and access to care are still not guaranteed, and in some countries are actively under threat. At a moment when the far-right is on the rise in many EU states, France’s move today, together with President Macron’s vow to enshrine the right to abortion in the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, should inspire political leaders to follow suit and protect abortion rights for current and future generations.
