Safeguarding civil society EU funding: European Commission must stand up for EU civic space

On 10 June, civil society organisations wrote to the European Commission to raise concerns over recent attacks on civil society EU funding, and call for continued support to safeguard EU values.

In recent months, civil society in Europe has faced increasing attacks by regressive actors - including at EU level. We have witnessed political hostility, mainly led by conservative and reactionary MEPs and think tanks, seeking to undermine the reputations of civil society organisations (CSOs) and limit their access to EU funding, notably for advocacy activities. These are not isolated incidents - they are part of a broader, deliberate effort to erode the fundamental values on which the European Union is built, as well as the EU itself.

It is urgent that the European Commission take action to safeguard and continue to support civil society in its role on the frontlines of defending democracy, the rule of law and fundamental rights across the EU - notably through a strengthened stand-alone Citizens, Equality, Rights and Values (CERV) Programme in the Union's next multiannual financial framework (MFF). This is vital to preserving democratic resilience in Europe.

On 10 June, equality CSOs, including IPPF EN, sent the following letter to the European Commission, inviting it to discuss the current threats and how it can deliver on its longstanding commitment to support civil society as a pillar of democracy, in particular through protecting funding and the freedom to advocate for rights and values.
